SAPA-GP Workshop Series 2004
Career Development in US Corporations and
Biotech/Pharma Investment in Asia/China
A workshop focusing on domestic corporate career development and biotech/pharma investment in Asia and, more specifically, China was hosted by SAPA-GP in Waldron Center, Gwynedd-Mercy College, Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania, on December 4, 2004.
The first session of the workshop was led by Dr. Shuet-Hing Lee Chiu, Senior Director, Merck Research Laboratories and Dr. Peter Ouyang, Senior Director, Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical R & D. Both speakers gave informative talks on how to build a successful career in pharmaceutical industry. Both emphasized the importance of identifying goals for those entering the field. Dr. Chiu also stressed the advantages in career development from obtaining and utilizing a mentor. Dr. Ouyang encouraged the audience to learn more about American culture and make more American friends within their companies.

In the second session, Dr. Jonas Wang, Partner, Sycamore Ventures and Former VP of Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products, Dr. Chia-Lin J. Wang, Director of U.S. East Coast Office, Development Center for Biotechnology and Dr. Mark Tang, President of World Technology Ventures LLC presented exciting talks on biotech/pharma investment in Asia/China. During their talks, they all described the extent of China's promise in the area of investment. In addition, Dr. Li, Xinhua, Consul of Chinese Consulate General in New York gave a talk on "Current Status of Chinese Healthcare'' which illustrated how much China has improved its healthcare system in the past few years. Mr. Stephen Ching, Executive Director, Law Firm of Obermayer Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel LLP, then introduced an exciting program "The Splendor of China" scheduled for April 13-21, 2006 in Philadelphia. This will be the largest China related event ever held in the USA history. The event will include a world summit on biotech/pharma.

In closing the workshop, Dr. Hancheng Zhang, president of SAPA-GP, presented award plaques honoring several SAPA-GP executive council members for their outstanding contributions to SAPA-GP in the period of 2003-2004.
Approximately 150 people attended the workshop and they were highly impressed by the speakers' excellent talks. Many of them hoped that SAPA-GP would hold more such activities in the future. More than 40 attendees stayed for the dinner party after the workshop, taking advantage of the opportunity to interact socially with the speakers, guests and other members.

Ø Know your business, build your credential, volunteer to be involved
Ø Become indispensable to the company: create dependency, people have to rely on you for important projects
Ø Find a good mentor
Ø Build a solid group of friends at group; Take initiatives
Ø First impression/First three years are extremely important
Ø Improve communication skills (written and oral)
o Upon request, HR may provide free training
